#35: Good coffee and good news
Hello storm chasers,
What do you get when you pass Wednesday and it’s not Friday? It’s Thursday, of course. Which means it’s time for another set of cartoons.
This week, a sloth gets a boost, a magician pulls a trick, and a presentation brings nothing but good news.
Counting his chickens,
Chris

Caption: “Eighteen shots of espresso, please.”
I think we’ve all been this sloth.
And maybe you still are this sloth. Maybe you need not one, but multiple shots of espresso to get going in the morning. And, maybe you can look utterly adorable doing it.
Maybe we’re all sloths.
A little artist’s note: I’m pretty sure this cartoon has been done before, but boy is it nice.
I ummed and ahhhh’ed on whether to draw this one but, in truth, whenever I thought about it, the idea made me pretty happy, and I decided that was enough to make it happen.
Technically speaking, this one is fairly straightforward, but it has a few tricks details of note. Most notably, you’ll notice that the booth that the sloth is sitting in uses a fun bit of perspective, so that no two lines are the exact same angle. And, you know, if you don’t notice it, then maybe I’ve done my job, right?
Caption: “Is this the card that has credit?”
Even magic can’t buy you a coffee.
But, what if your specialty is card tricks? And that maybe you were working through your wallet to try and find which credit card still had credit on it? And then, well then, what if you were wrong and you didn’t get your coffee.
We’ve all been there.
A little artist’s note: This one is so very simple, but I do really like it.
I toyed a lot with the caption, and it had an almost excessive amount of iteration before it reached its current and final destination. And, like all iteration, I could probably make a whole lot more changes and still not be happy with it. But I do really like the idea of the magician acting and speaking like this is another card trick.
The other thing of note, and you’ll see it in a few of my more recent cartoons, is that I’m pushing a little harder on the shadows to make them a little darker and to add a little more depth. I think it works quite well, and it makes things shine a little brighter, so to speak.
Caption: “I've got good news, and I've got bad news disguised as good news.”
Have you done this presentation?
You know the one. The one where you have something bad to tell your bosses and you need to work out a way to say it and get away with it. And so you wrap that bad news into something good and hope it will distract them.
And, sometimes, it works.
A little artist’s note: This one is very simple, but very effective.
You’ve got the presentation, and barrage of the charts, and then you’ve got the boardroom table, complete with anguish. But I struggled a lot in the composition and the amount of detail to include. It’s the usual issue, but it happens every time. I’m pretty pleased with the result, but it did take quite a bit of deliberation to get that composition right.
And much like the guy making the presentation, did I get away with it?
