#68: Olympic News
Hello athletes,
Some cartoons are losers. They get second place. Third place. Dead last. And some are winners, like these three.
This week, we go to the Olympic Games for a magician’s lesson in economics, and then the news gives us the cold shoulder.
Just chilling,
Chris

I love the Olympics, I really do. But financially, the Olympics are bad news for the host city.
Because, by the time they build the new stadiums, the athletes villages and all the little and big things required for a few weeks of sporting achievements, the money begins to run dry. And it can take decades to pay back that debt.
All for 5 shiny rings.
Atlas has the whole world in this hands.
It’s a sweaty job, keeping it up. And it’s especially so when you’re waiting for an Olympic weigh-in.
We’ve all been there, right?
A little artist’s note: Chronologically, the bonus cartoon came first here, but they were both drawn during a 24-hour flight from Melbourne to New York. Atlas, was drawn on the first leg, while the magician was drawn while waiting for a delayed flight. What can I say? I had time on my hands.
Visually, these couldn’t contrast more. The rings is a very simple cartoon. Just a couple of components. While Altas is packed with things to make it work. You’ve got the Atlas himself, standing uncomfortably, you’ve got the Olympic official, rocking the polo shirt, and you’ve got the guy on the scales, waiting for his result. But they all need to be there to make it work.

Sometimes the news is hard to watch.
You know how it is. You see the headlines, you put your head in your hands, and then the shivers come. Cold shivers. Chills that bring the arctic to your living room. You think it couldn’t get any colder.
And then you watch for the next headline.
A little artist’s note: I think we are all this person. And while I’ve taken this to a relative extreme, the news really does give me the chills sometimes. Like everything just goes cold. Too cold.
Visually, this one is pretty simple. The most notable things were ensuring that when you saw the man on the couch, he was hot, and when you saw the woman on the couch, she was very very cold. And if I’ve pulled that off then I guess I’ve done my job right.
One last note. You’ll see that the TV has a few things plugged in, you know, like a real one would. This probably wouldn’t stand up compared to a real TV, but I decided it needed the plugs as without them, it kind of just looks like a black box.
