#90: Fight or flight
Hello winners
It’s a chaotic time for everyone, it seems. May these cartoons lighten your load or, at least, poorly distract you from it.
This week we have a penguin achieving a dream in an unexpected way and a concert goer dealing with a long-experienced quandary.
Sitting down then standing up,
Chris

Caption: “Flightless no more.”
Penguins are flightless birds, but we often fail to ask what sort of flight.
Because, maybe, instead of taking to the open skies, a penguin would be just as happy with a nice flight of craft beer, sold on a wooden paddle in a rustic brewpub of course.
I was reminded of this one, and penguins in general, after watching the truly excellent new Wallace and Gromit movie, Vengeance Most Fowl. No beer involved there, though.
A little artist’s note: I’ve got to admit, this cartoon makes me smile every time I see it. When I drew it, I was trying a different technique with my shading and it, well, it just worked. It, combined with the sheer joy of the penguin, also feels like a nice salve for all of the other chaos in the world.
No other notes, just pure penguin joy.

You paid for sitting, but the guy in front of you had other ideas.
And then, is the guy in front standing because the guy in front of him is also standing? And is that then a cascade where if the guy at the very front just sat down, could everyone behind them enjoy the seats behind them?
Oh the humanity!
A little artist’s note: While this is a problem encountered by everyone, for those of you in Melbourne, Australia, I can tell you right now that this cartoon is based on seeing a gig at the majestic Palais Theatre in St Kilda. It’s a beautiful place, but you just just just know that someone is going to stand and your comfortable seat will become largely useless.
Visually, this one is also heavy on the shading, although perhaps the most tedious part was drawing the many many chairs to build out the theatre/concert hall. If I drew this today, I would probably take a few shortcuts and just imply the chairs, but this was the work of past Chris, and past Chris clearly had a lot more of a focus on the minor and unnecessary details.
